What are meta tags and why do they matter?

HTML meta tags are elements placed in the <head> section of a web page that provide structured metadata about the page. Unlike content tags (headings, paragraphs, images), meta tags are not rendered on the page itself — they are read by search engines, social media platforms, and browser applications to understand and categorise the page.

For SEO, the two most important meta tags are <title> (technically not a meta tag but the page title) and <meta name="description">. The title appears as the blue link in Google search results and in the browser tab. Google typically displays 50–60 characters. The description appears as the grey text below the title in search results — while it does not directly affect rankings, a compelling description significantly improves click-through rate from search results pages.

For social sharing, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags control the appearance of link previews. For crawl control, the robots meta tag tells search engine crawlers whether to index the page and follow its links. For canonical URLs, the link rel="canonical" tag tells Google which version of a page to index when duplicate content exists across multiple URLs.

Common mistakes

  • Duplicate title tags — Every page must have a unique, descriptive title. Duplicate titles across multiple pages confuse search engines and hurt rankings.
  • Missing description on important pages — While not a direct ranking factor, a missing description causes Google to auto-generate one from your page content, which is often poorly chosen.
  • Keyword stuffing in meta tags — The keywords meta tag has been ignored by Google since 2009. Cramming keywords into your title or description unnaturally harms user experience and may trigger spam filters.
