JSON vs YAML: what are the differences?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) and YAML (YAML Ain't Markup Language) both represent hierarchical data, but they have different design philosophies. JSON is designed for machine generation and parsing — it's strict, has no comments, and uses a minimal syntax of curly braces, square brackets, colons, and commas. YAML is designed for human readability — it uses indentation to represent nesting (like Python), allows inline comments with #, and has multiple ways to represent the same value (block vs flow style).

YAML is a superset of JSON: any valid JSON document is also valid YAML 1.2. This means JSON-to-YAML conversion is straightforward — the structure is identical, only the syntax changes. Going the other direction (YAML to JSON) requires resolving YAML's additional types (timestamps, anchors, aliases, tags) which JSON does not support.

YAML is the preferred format for configuration files (Kubernetes manifests, GitHub Actions workflows, Docker Compose files, Ansible playbooks) because its readability and comment support make it easier to maintain. JSON is preferred for API responses and data storage because its strictness makes it easier to parse reliably.

Common mistakes

  • YAML indentation — YAML uses spaces (not tabs) for indentation. Mixing tabs and spaces causes parse errors. Most YAML parsers reject tab characters entirely.
  • YAML type coercion surprises — YAML automatically converts strings like yes, no, true, false, null, and bare numbers to their native types. A country code like NO (Norway) will be parsed as a boolean false unless quoted.
